Purim: God Saves His People

The holiday of Purim celebrates God’s rescue of the Jewish people from the destruction plotted by Haman. The story is found in the Book of Esther. Although it is the only book in the Bible that does not mention God’s name, the Lord’s presence and guidance may be seen in each of the ten chapters of this wonderful part of Scripture.

Purim is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the Hebrew month of Adar (in 2014, it is the evening of March 15 and the day of March 16), with joyful gatherings and special foods such as hamantaschen – a delicious cookie in the shape of the villain Haman’s tri-cornered hat.
